Pay Attention When You Check Out

I went to the grocery store today and was checking out. I glanced at the screen when there were only a few items left and noticed it said my total was $53.00. I proceeded to swipe my card and prepare to pay for my items.

"Your total is $107" the cashier called.

I thought to myself, "What could I have bought that cost almost $50?"

I looked at the screen and saw a charge for $47.84 for a fresh meat item. I asked the cashier about it, and told her the only meat items I bought were chicken and ground beef, each priced at about $3. She searched through my bags to find the item.

Finally, she figured it out. She had punched in the code 4784 for my squash and accidentally pushed the fresh meat key instead of the produce key. So, my 35 cent squash almost cost me $50. She fixed her mistake and I gratefully paid for my $55 worth of groceries.

I never realized how important it really is to watch the screen when you check out. It was only a slip of her finger that caused me to be overcharged. From now on, I will pay close attention every time I check out.
