Okay, so I know I gave birth a few months ago, but I thought I would share my thoughts on what contractions feel like. I have a few friends getting close to their due dates, so I found this to be a good topic. The whole time I was in labor they had me hooked up to a blood pressure machine(I don't know if there is a medical term for it). It would take my blood pressure every 15 minutes, and I hated it. It was almost the worst part of labor, especially when I was already having a contraction and it would kick on. A few times I just ripped it off and threw it away from me because I hated it so much. The nurses would come in and ask what happened, and I would have to admit to my moment of anger at the machine. Well, I think that since I hated that thing so much, in my mind, contractions felt like they put a blood pressure cuff around my midsection and made it get as tight as possible on my belly. Other women may disagree with me, and it may just be because I hated the blood pressure cuff so much, but that is, in my opinion, what contractions feel like.
In my birthing classes we practiced breathing through contractions. In one class, we had to put clothespins on our ears to help us pretend. Chris got really into it and put it on his nipple. In the other class, they had me hold ice in my hands. Now neither of these in any way imitate real contractions, but I guess they do help you learn how to breathe through pain. So, try it out and see what you think.

hey Lindsay, this is Lisa - I was in Peggy's Bible study with you in CS. That's funny what you say about the blood pressure machine - I also hated it and that heart monitor thing around my belly. I also unhooked mine pretty much during every contraction because I liked to walk around during them, which probably defeated the purpose of having that thing anyways.
For me, my baby was sunny-side up until the last second, so I had a lot of back labor and contractions were mostly intense feelings in my lower back.
